Hi! I'm Maggie, the artist behind Magpie Saltwater Studio.

I am a full-time fisheries biologist and part-time artist based in Bellingham, Washington. My artwork spans block printing, painting, and digital illustration, often inspired by the Salish Sea bioregion and Alaska. For as long as I can remember, my visual art has been deeply connected to my love of ecology. I’m inspired by the beauty and power of the plants and animals we share our home with, and I feel called to tell their stories through both art and environmental advocacy.

My life and work are especially rooted in Southeast Alaska, where my mom grew up and where I spent many formative summers exploring my love of fishing, island camping, and being on the water. Catching Dungeness crab and eating them on the beach, tromping through muskeg in search of huckleberries, and learning to identify salmon species as I steered them into the net from my fishing rod — these memories are an essential part of who I am and continue to shape both my life and my creative work. I've also spent two seasons as a commercial fisherman in Juneau and Bristol Bay, Alaska.

Through my art, I hope to spark curiosity, reverence, and a deeper sense of connection to the natural world. Whether it's the quiet resilience of a tidepool ecosystem or the powerful return of salmon to their spawning grounds, I aim to celebrate the stories that flow through these places. By blending science and creativity, I strive to offer work that not only reflects the beauty around us but also inspires care, stewardship, and wonder.
